Decluttering Tips and Tricks the Pros Want You to Know

We are in the business of helping people keep their homes free of clutter, but we know that it’s one of those chores that often finds itself put off until another day (and then another, and another…). Even the mere mention of the word “declutter” will have most happy home owners running for the hills. Decluttering your home doesn’t have to be a dreaded chore. There are many helpful strategies professional home organizers are happy to share to make the task a whole lot more manageable.

The Basics

The hardest thing about decluttering your house is getting started. Experts suggest starting small. Pick one room and carve out five dedicated minutes. We know it doesn’t sound like much, but that’s the point. A small job is more manageable and easier to commit to. There are a multitude of tasks that can be completed in just 5 minutes (see below for ideas for every room). Then simply build on that. Spend another 5 minutes the following day and continue. Hey, if you really get into it go ahead and shoot for 15 minutes.

The next suggestion is to make sure you complete each task completely. Pick one task a day and finish it. Don’t spend that five minutes jumping from room to room. It will all get finished in time, trust us.

Finally, make sure you finish organizing before you purchase anything. It’s tempting to go out and buy those cute bins and perfectly divided drawer organizers, but you don’t know what you will really need until everything has found a place. Most likely, you will just end up with a stack of containers and no idea where to use them.

Room by Room

Now there is nothing left for you to do expect to pick a room, any room. Here are our suggestions on some starting points to help you get started in every room of the house.

Closet

Clear a shelf. Pick one shelf and take everything off of it. Go through it and make sure you weed out non-essentials or items you no longer need. Place everything back in an organized manner.

Kitchen

Start with one counter. Get rid of all the junk and find a home for anything that is not used on a daily basis. Haven’t juiced anything since December? Put that juicer in the cupboard. Put all those important papers and other junk that’s been piling up in their proper place too.

Bathroom

Go through the medicine cabinet. Get rid of those expired prescriptions, outdated makeup and other things you no longer use. Wipe it down and group what’s remaining by usefulness.

Living Room

Teach kids where there things go. Take five minutes to remind the little ones where to place their items after playtime. Be sure it’s something manageable for their age. A big tub or box that they can throw things in will keep their mess off the floor and out of sight.

Home Office

Paper, whether it be mail, bills, or important record, accounts for the bulk of clutter around any household. Designate a spot for incoming papers, an “inbox”. This will help you keep everything in one place and a lot easier to find. Take five minutes on a future “maintenance” day to go through the papers in this one area and file or trash depending on their importance.

There will always be those things around the hose that you may not have a place for, that’s where we come in. Whether it be those seasonal decorations or Grandma’s heirloom trinkets (waiting for the child-free house), we’ve always got a place for you to keep it and help keep your home clutter free.
