Turning Trash into Treasures Anew

Garage sales are a fun weekend pastime. It all stems from that thrill of uncovering the perfect treasure or that priceless artifact that you didn’t expect. But what of the often ignored junk that gets trashed the next day? Many of those frequently overlooked items are prizes in their own right. All that is needed is a new outlook and a little elbow grease. Here is some crafty advice to help you make the most of yard sale finds.

Tips for getting the best goods.

First and foremost you want to make sure you know where to shop. Be sure to check out local listings and community postings (like craigslist) ahead of time. Look for estate sales, flea markets, or those good ole garage sales. Once you find your mark, be sure you get their early. The good stuff can go fast, so yes you should set an alarm (on the weekend). Don’t let the rush of the find give you buyer’s remorse. Always inspect before you buy. Check the structure of items. Sit in chairs, open drawers, wiggle table legs. Be sure there is no damage that is irreparable or signs of bugs. You don’t want to take home more than you bargained for.

What to look for.

According to upscale pros there are several things to look for that are typically safe bet. From benches to dressers, anything made from solid wood is a great catch. Wood is easy to clean, paint and restore. Chairs (that are structurally sound) are a great restoration project. Even worn or tacky upholstery can be painted or replaced. Dressers are a goldmine waiting to happen. They can be restored or reworked into something completely new (entertainment stand, cabinet, changing table… almost endless possibilities). Metal bed frames or other framed furniture are often easy to find and require only a few coats of paint to renew them.

Some crafty ideas.

Once you have your treasures-in-waiting you may need some inspo to help you get started, here are some of our favorite projects:

  • There is no need to refinish the entire dresser, as is demonstrated in this Herringbone design dresser. The old finish peeking out between the teal paint makes it look even more attractive.
  • This rocking chair rehab, proves that you don’t need to refinish to redo. The addition of this slip cover makes the original nearly unrecognizable.
  • With the addition of a prepacked table leg kit, this suitcase is turned into a unique and retro side table.
  • These are for the kids (or rather the parents) out there. A little chalk paint turns this old coffee table into a versatile play station. For the aspiring chef, and old TV stand is transformed into a miniature play kitchen, complete with an oven and sink.

We hope these tips have motivated you to take another look at what might be considered old junk. Keep in mind that you don’t necessarily have to go out searching for items like these elsewhere. Many of the things that you might have in your self-storage unit can be revamped and upcycled just the same.
