Our Favorite Holiday Storage Hacks

Nothing marks the beginning of the holiday season like pulling out the festive decorations. With just a few simple hacks, you’ll be able to eliminate the most common decorating frustrations. Broken ornaments, tangled light strands, or torn wrapping paper can be a thing of the past. Plus, these hacks can help you store those decorations in the most efficient way to make the best use of your storage space.

Don’t Get Stranded

Use a folded over piece of masking tape or a paper tag to mark your light strands. Taking an extra minute now to jot down bulb color, strand length, and where, in or on your home a strand belongs will save you exponentially more time in the future. Wondering how best to store those strands?

Repurpose cardboard from the boxes your gifts shipped in for an eco-friendly solution. Once you have a flat sheet of cardboard, cut notches in opposing sides and simply wrap light strands around. Store vertically in a plastic crate or box.

Suck It In

No, we don’t mean your post-cookie waistline. Vacuum sealing holiday pillows, blankets, tree skirts, and linens can save major space and help protect those textiles from accumulating odors when they’re tucked away.

What to Do with a Wreath?

An inexpensive paper towel holder hung on the wall creates space to store multiple wreaths. Bending the holder slightly upwards will help the wreaths to stay put. Or you can zip individual wreaths into suit storage bags and hang them in a spare closet. The bags will contain glitter and protect the wreaths from being crushed or snagging other hanging items.

It’s a Wrap

How many times have you pulled out a roll of wrapping paper only to find it crumpled or torn? The solution is simpler than you could imagine. Just take a toilet paper holder, cut it open lengthwise, and slide over the roll. The cardboard holder will gently hold the roll together. Over-the-door organizers are a great solution for storing wrapping paper, scissors, and tape year-round. Extra rolls can be zipped up into suit storage bags and hung. And don’t forget tissue paper! Neatly fold sheets of tissue paper over clothing hangers.

Have a Ball

Special ornament storage containers do exist but they can get pricey if you have a large collection. For a budget-friendly solution, place plastic cups in the bottom of a plastic bin and place ornaments inside. Cut up a cardboard box to create multiple layers of cups. Using clear cups and clear plastic bins will make it easy to find specific ornaments at a glance. Small ornaments can be tucked into egg cartons for safe-keeping.

Preserve That Tree

If you have artificial trees that you decorate the same way every year, simply wrap the whole tree in plastic wrap- ornaments, lights, and all-and stash it away in storage.
