Downsizing: Coming To You This Summer

It’s time to tackle that basement, huh?  Your daughter is moving back for the summer, or you finally bought that treadmill, or you saw Storage Wars and remembered that your grandmother’s china is in one of the bins in the very back and is probably worth a million dollars.  Whatever the reason, this summer is your wheelhouse for bringing order and civilization to your home. It’s time to make the tough choices of what stays and goes.
Here are a few thoughts to keep yourself in line, on task, and upbeat:
  1. Take It Box by Box
Don’t let the size of the task keep you from beginning. If you think about it in small and manageable steps, you’ll get further than you’d expect faster than you thought. The trick is to start small and to:
  2. Keep Calm And Downsize On
It will take awhile. Don’t get discouraged. This is the perfect time to revisit your old mix cds from college.
  3. It’s Not Me. It’s You
Be merciless. Did you find a box of cardboard scraps beneath the stairs that you had thought you’d make into holiday ornaments ten years ago?  Listen to your instinct and decide whether it’s really worth hanging onto. And keep in mind that you had totally forgotten you even had that box in the first place
  4. Ride That Wave
Once you get started, you’ll remember how much fun this can be. You’ll start to feel the invigoration of finally seeing the floor of your basement after all these years. You’ll start imagining the possibilities of how to use your space more effectively.  Pretty soon you’ll have your attic and garage queued up for a downsizing spree.
  5. Spot The Diamonds In The Rough
Sooner or later, you’re going to find an absolute gem. Is it your family history project from fourth grade? An heirloom clock from your grandfather? A box of tile that matches the damaged floor of your upstairs bathroom? Make sure to recognize a treasure when you see it and don’t dump it so willingly.
  6. Phone A Friend
You’ve done it! You’ve gotten through all the junk you can do without and have filled your curb on bulk pickup trash day. Congratulations!  But you still have treasures stacked in boxes, lining the wall. They’re indispensible, but your space is limited. That’s where we come in. We keep your treasures safe and secure. And out of your basement.
