Fall Cleaning is the new Spring Cleaning. We said it. Sorry Spring Cleaning, we feel like as soon as the weather starts dipping we get in the mood for some major Fall Cleaning to get our home feeling cozy and organized, and to make room for decorative gourd season, of course. Since Fall is officially now here, here are some tips on how to store your items with us for the Fall and get your home in tip top shape.

Clean and declutter:

Before storing your items for the fall, declutter your belongings room by room and clean them to ensure they are in good condition for storage. IE if you are switching drapery for the season make sure it is clean before it goes away. Donate anything that you aren’t excited about using next year to keep things simple.

Store seasonal clothing:

Pack away your summer clothes and make space for your fall and winter wardrobe. Use vacuum-sealed bags or storage bins to maximize space and protect your clothing from moisture and dust and keep out any bugs.

Protect fragile items:

If you have delicate or breakable items, such as glassware or decorations, wrap them individually in bubble wrap or foam before storing to prevent damage. You’ll be glad you did.

Organize outdoor furniture:

Clean and store patio furniture, garden tools, and other outdoor equipment in a covered area or with us in a storage unit to protect them from the elements during the fall and winter months.

Utilize storage containers:

Use sturdy plastic bins or boxes with lids to store your belongings. Label each container with its contents to easily locate items later.

Consider climate-controlled storage:

If you live in an area with extreme temperature changes or high humidity, consider renting a climate-controlled storage unit to protect temperature-sensitive items.

Elevate items off the ground:

Place pallets or wooden blocks on the floor of your storage unit to prevent moisture from seeping into your belongings. Remember to leave a walkway through.

Protect against pests:

Use pest deterrents such as mothballs or cedar chips to ward off insects that may damage your stored items. Make sure seals are airtight to help with this.

Create an inventory:

Keep track of what you have stored by creating an inventory list. This will help you locate items later on without rummaging through all your boxes.

Optimize space:

Make use of vertical space by stacking boxes or utilizing shelving units in your storage unit. This will maximize the available space and make it easier to access your items.

Now you are ready for anything Fall or Winter throws your way. Now you can sit and enjoy a proper PSL (pumpkin spice latte) while admiring your progress. Got any additional questions? We are happy to help. Check out our other Ogdensburg storage tips here or give us a call at 973.823.9090.
