The Pros and Cons of Portable Containers

Remember the days of loading up a friend’s truck with all of your boxes, bags and bedroom furniture every time you moved from place to place? Odds are your move was days-in-the-making, eating up tons of time and required dozens of sweaty trips back and forth and pizza. So much pizza. Today, if you want to avoid the hassle of loading a rental truck and driving it to your new home, there’s another moving option to consider: portable storage containers.

Portable containers are deposited right outside your door by a company of your choice and many times sound like a great option. But similar to any choice you make, there are other things to take into consideration. Join us as we explore the pros and cons of using portable containers.

The Good

The number one reason that people turn to portable containers is convenience. They are delivered to you. There’s no need to drive a large vehicle. You won’t have to maneuver a truck in heavy traffic and you won’t have to worry about breakdowns along the way.

Portable storage companies have the ability to ship your items where they need to go. Have you ever tried to get a mover to move your furnishings across the country? How about overseas? Most traditional moving companies just don’t have the logistics necessary for pulling these types of moves off; however, some portable moving container companies do have the capability which makes this method of moving all the easier and more reliable if you are faced with a challenging or long-distance move.

Having your storage unit delivered directly to a storage facility saves you the added task of trying to get a moving truck, then unloading the truck once you reach the storage facility. With portable storage, your packed unit is transported exactly as you packed it and delivered to the storage site. This way, you don’t have to rely on having separate transport methods for your stored items.

The Bad

While containers offer some convenience, they aren’t for everyone.

They’re generally more expensive. While all moves are different, a typical in-town move using a portable storage container generally costs between $200 and $300. That’s more than double the typical cost of a truck rental. A cross-country move with a container typically costs about $3,000, compared to about $2,000 when using a rental truck, including fuel costs.

You may need a parking permit. Most portable storage companies will recommend that any customer who want containers placed on streets near their homes first contact local governments and homeowner associations to make sure there are no restrictions regarding street parking. That’s can add more hassles than it’s worth.

There may be additional restrictions. Some homeowner associations have strict rules about where portable storage containers can be placed on properties. Lawns and driveways may be off limits.

Your neighbors may hate you. Enough said. Try to keep this a short and sweet time to keep neighborhood relations positive.

Sizes can be limited. The typical portable containers range in size from 7 feet long by 7 feet wide by 8 feet high to 16 feet long by 8 feet wide by 8 feet high. If you need more storage, you must rent another container; you can’t rent a partial unit. You have more flexibility in size with a rental truck. A panel truck, which is basically a van with a 12-foot-long box, is often the smallest truck you can rent, with most companies offering models up to 24 feet long and tractor-trailers.

Can you get to your stuff? For a quick move, getting your stuff easily from door-to-door sounds great. But if there is a period of time before you make it to your new residence you may not have access to your stuff. An onsite temporary storage unit allows you to store your stuff but gives you convenient access.
