The Correct Way to Store Your Clothes

Clothing is one of the most common items people store. And the majority of those people think clothing storage is pretty straightforward, but it’s easy to make common storage mistakes that will cost you time, money, and your clothes! Properly cleaning, packaging, and storing your clothing will dramatically increase the lifespan of your closet. Take a look at our guide to the correct way to store your clothes.

Store ‘em Clean

Storing clothing in good condition will help ensure the garments stay in good shape while they are packed away. Regardless of how clean you think your clothes are, don’t just throw them into a storage bin and forget about them. A little prep will go a long way. Wash your garment according to the guidelines on the label even if the item looks clean.

Go with Climate Control

Hardly anyone thinks of utilizing climate control to store clothing. If your wardrobe is important enough to store, then it deserves climate control. When you’re swapping out sweaters for summer dresses or storing a wedding gown, climate-controlled storage can keep your clothes in good shape. Leather that’s not stored in a climate-controlled space is more susceptible to moisture, which can discolor the pieces and cause mildew. The last thing you want is mold and mildew finding their way to your clothing in storage, especially if they’ll be sitting unattended for several months.

Plastic Over Cardboard

Not only will sturdy clear plastic containers help you easily find your stored garments, but they can also help protect them too. Using plastic storage bins instead of cardboard boxes prevents moisture from reaching your clothing. (Although climate control is the best option for keeping fabrics dry.)

Prevent Creases

Avoid hard fold lines or creases, by rolling up garments instead of folding. Separate garments with acid-free tissue paper to protect the fabrics. And if you’re hanging items, choose padded, plastic or wooden hangers for hanging storage. Wire hangers can damage clothing over time.

Keep ‘em Fresh

For extra protection from moths, consider adding lavender sachets to your stack of seasonal clothes. Lavender smells pretty to us but is actively loathed by moths. Not only will this help prevent pests, but it will make your clothes smell good! Charcoal bags can also help absorb odors while your clothes and shoes are stored, making sure everything smells fresh and clean when you unpack next year.

Although clothing is a common item in our Ogdensburg self-storage units, there’s some stuff you absolutely shouldn’t store. We do not allow anything containing combustible chemicals like paint thinner, paint, or gasoline. Food or other perishable items are also discouraged unless you have a climate-controlled unit. Even pet items like bagged pet food, treats, or rawhide could attract unwanted visitors to the self-storage unit.  Questions about storing your items? Reach out to us.
