To Declutter or Not to Declutter, That Is the Question

To spare you any anxiety over the suspense of the question, we’ll go ahead and say that the answer is to declutter! To greater or lesser extents, we all have clutter. We are material girls (and guys) in a material world and it just happens. But it is something we can control. Not everyone is worthy of appearing on the TV show “Hoarders,” but let’s make sure we never get close to needing go there. Generally speaking, there are two types of clutter, or build up, if you will: items that are personally or emotionally significant, and items that are simply never gotten rid of. The importance is to know the difference between the two.

Personal belongings that have significance to us or recreate past events can be photograph albums, wedding or first communion dresses, boxes of old letters, etc. These have value to us, and rightly so. They should be kept, and if your home has no room for them, that is why we are here to help you out with some extra space.

On the other hand, clutter that is true clutter is the stuff that we haven’t taken time to pitch, and let’s admit that it does take time, especially when you may have lived in the same house for 30 years, raised a few kids and are now looking forward to retirement. Issues from old magazine subscriptions, clothes that you don’t fit into or they aren’t your style anymore, household gadgets you don’t ever use, broken furniture, outdated media, old toys, and more kitchen dishes than could ever be used by one house. There is a general saying that if you haven’t used something for a year then it can be donated, sold, or just tossed. While not a perfect blanket statement to cover everything you may own, it is a good rule of thumb. When you haven’t used something in a long time and at one time thought you had an emotional attachment to it, time may show you that that attachment is no longer there and you are ready to part ways.

There are many great benefits to decluttering your home. Because you have less things and better organized belongings, it will be easier to find what you are looking for. In a country that easily accumulates more items than is necessary, decluttering and living life more simply will give you a greater peace of mind. Try it! Not only a peace of mind for yourself, but in your home and in your marriage. If the garage is decluttered and you can actually park the car in there, think of how many arguments you will be spared! That alone is motivation enough.
