Fall Cleaning Tips for Every Area of Your Home

Spring is not the only season for cleaning here in Sussex County, NJ. With the imminent holidays and approaching winter season, fall is an important time to show your home some TLC. Use fall’s brisk and breezy days to conquer deep-cleaning chores for a clean and comfortable winter home, and to wrap up summer’s outdoor lifestyle. It’s easy to do with these simple fall cleaning tips for every area of your home.

Tackle Your Great Room:

Let’s talk windows. You could use a quality glass cleaner, or one squirt of dishwashing liquid in a spray bottle filled with water will do the trick. Wipe them down with a microfiber cloth. Here’s an expert tip: Pick a cloudy day so you can better see any streaks.

On to dusting. You probably dust your furniture on a regular basis, but this season take the time to include your ceilings, walls, and baseboards. They most likely have a post-summer dust buildup. Use your vacuum’s long brush attachment on ceilings, walls, baseboards, and woodwork.

Of course, you should vacuum! But not just the floor. Removing dust from furniture will keep it looking its best. Use the upholstery attachment on your vacuum. You can also protect delicate upholstery by vacuuming through a screen to prevent the fabric from being sucked into the nozzle.

Get ready for the man in the big red suit. A chimney sweep will ensure the chimney is free of creosote (a residue that builds up on the chimney’s inner walls and can cause fires), as well as soot and other debris.

Don’t Forget the Kitchen:

Ignore your cabinets no more. Empty them, wash them down, replace liners (if you use them), declutter, and reorganize. And finally give the outside a good wipe down.

Understand the ins and outs of refrigerator cleaning. Remove all the contents of the shelves, racks, bins, and trays. Wash everything with an antibacterial cleaner. Dust the refrigerator condenser coil with your vacuum’s brush attachment. You’ll probably have to pop out the decorative grill below the refrigerator door.

Get ready for the biggest meal of the year! Start with your pantry. Replace spices that are more than six months old or no longer fragrant and stock up on staples such as flour and sugar.

Get Down to the Bedroom:

Bring on the winter clothes! Now is the perfect time to organize your closets. Pack up summer clothes and linens, and replace them with cool-season items. Pull out items that you no longer wear or don’t fit anymore. Make a pile of clothing to donate.

Winterize those beds. Pull out all of your heavier winter blankets and give them a solid wash to make them feel like new. Flip or rotate your mattress (you should do this with each change of season). If you like cozy beds, change from light cotton sheets to all-cotton flannel and swap your lightweight bedspread to a heavier duvet.
