Don’t Clean Harder, Clean Smarter

Spring is just around the corner here in Sparta, NJ, and for many of us, that little ray of sunshine means it’s time to give our home a top-to-bottom buffing. But spring cleaning doesn’t have to become an all-season-long chore.  Don’t let the idea of spring cleaning overwhelm you. With our easy and manageable tips, you’ll be cleaning smarter, not harder this year.

Not Just for Dishes Anymore

A dishwasher is a lazy person’s dream: Without lifting a finger, you suddenly have clean dishes again! But dishwashers can clean so much more than pots and pans; try throwing in rubber shoes, car parts, plastic toys, and tools, too.

Dust is Afoot

Dust mites, no more! Turns out, those fluffy socks you got in your Christmas stocking are a magnet for dust and hair. Walk around with that comfy chenille on your feet for a weekend, and you’ve just dusted the entire house—no effort required.

(Almost) Self Cleaning Microwave

Nothing is more repulsive than the smell of leftovers that waft from the microwave, and even if you don’t notice it, food bacteria from multiple uses can accumulate in there over time. For an easy fix, pour two cups of water and ½ cup of vinegar into a microwave-safe bowl and nuke it for three minutes on full power. Wipe your microwave clean and it’s as good as new.

Shower

Washing grimy shower tiles can be a daunting task. But instead of putting it off, squeegee your tiled walls and glass shower door after every use to make the chore less dreadful. And if you’re feeling especially lazy, spray it with no-wipe cleaner. Problem solved!

Set a Timer

It’s hard to stay on track when cleaning. You may find items you’ve forgotten or old photographs, and before you know it you’ve spent the entire day cleaning just one closet. Set a timer so you don’t fall into before you start each job. You can also use the time to give yourself a little break here and there. Much like a list, it can help you stay on track.

Multitask

Take your time and let grimy surfaces, like the ones in your bathroom and kitchen, soak in your cleaning solution. Work on something else on your list while your cleaner does the hard work.

Treat Yo’ Self

For the most part, having something to look forward to at the end of a long day of cleaning sure makes things go faster. Plus, you worked hard and deserve it.

OK, so these ideas won’t make all the dirt magically disappear, but the tips above may help make the process a little less overwhelming. Just remember to pace yourself. You don’t have to do everything in one day. Spring is also a great time to declutter.
