And then there were three

Don Herold said, “Babies are such a nice way to start people.” And they are. Smiles, soft skin, and giggles that make all the sleepless nights and poopy diapers worth it. If you live in a small house or apartment, adding a new member to your family can make arrangements sort of like a Tetris game. How does it all fit seamlessly and how can you optimize all the space you have, or don’t have, as the case may be. It is mind boggling all the presents that are given at baby showers. 42 onesies, 2 bath tubs, 8 hair ribbons, 14 pacifiers (which will all definitely get used and lost), 6 blankets, etc. And with clothes, these presents can range in sizes from newborn to 24 months. You don’t need it all at once, or may have to wait for the appropriate season, or your baby was 9.5 lbs. (ouch!) and newborn clothes last 5 days. Here are some tips for arranging your home and storage unit for your new bundle of joy!

Nesting is a thing. Your body knows instinctively to get ready for something new and you may not have as much physical energy for a while to deal with a junk drawer. Now is a fantastic time to purge. Over and over again we say, purge. Especially do this before all those baby showers.

When space is an issue, think vertically. Just as when you pack a moving truck you move upwards, so too do in your home.

  • Thinking vertically beginning on the floor, use the space under the baby crib for storage. Long plastic containers can fit quite well.
  • Baby clothes are not particularly long, as babies are notoriously short. Add a second rod to your closet to hang up the frilly dresses and jackets.
  • You want your baby to be a well read child, so if there is no space for a book case, add shelves to the wall to for your library of board books.
  • Toy hammocks are fantastic for corners of the baby room. Fill it with plush toys that won’t be too heavy for it.

Self-storage may be needed for your additions of little people. Not the children themselves, of course. If you have a few years between babies, use self-storage to tuck away baby clothes and toys and high chairs until needed again. Before putting them into storage, wash them with unscented detergent. Divide the clothes by sexes and size and be sure to label the boxes clearly with this information!

Magazines, Pinterest, family and friends give lots of advice on what you need along with your new baby. Some is good, some is disposable. Remember, you don’t have to keep every gift that is given to you. Figure out what works for your family and go with it.
