The 7 Worst Packing/Moving Mistakes (Almost) Everyone Makes

Trust us. We’ve been through enough boxes and have seen enough moves to know the what’s what of packing. Packing up a house, or moving is not something that can be done without any preparation. So if you are forecasting a move here are some things you’ll want to know to avoid, before you start stuffing your belongings into those boxes.

Not leaving enough time to pack all your stuff. So you’re moving, next week? Yeah, you may want to stock up on the caffeine because you will be working day and night. The moving experts recommend using an eight week plan, to help your moving and packing go as smoothly as possible. Of course that is an ideal moving situation, but the rule is the more time the better. Here is a helpful plan.

Not sorting through all your stuff before packing. As soon as the thought of moving enters your head, you should probably consider purging. Do you really want to spend your valuable packing time deciding what to do with those Christmas decorations in the back of the closet, which you haven’t touched in five years? Decide what to pack, store, or donate before you bring in the boxes.

Not packing a survival kit. You pull up to your new digs in the moving truck, ready to take in the beauty of your new home. Just as soon as you use the restroom. “Uh, honey where did we pack the toilet paper?” Pack a box with the essential things that you will need for your first day in your new home. Cleaning supplies, toilet paper, toiletries, kitchen utensils, even a change of clothes.

Overloading boxes. “Wow, I can fit all of the books from this book case into one box” Only if you’re He-Man (or She-Ra). The rule for packing should be light stuff in the big boxes (like bedding or clothing) and heavy stuff in the small boxes (like all those yearbooks). In general, be mindful of how you pack each box because someone is going to have to lift it.

Packing breakables the wrong way. Sure you can use an entire roll of bubble wrap to safeguard that glass vase, or you can just follow some suggestions from packing experts. For one, be sure glass is not touching glass, a small cushioned barrier in between each item will help keep them stay in one piece. And surprisingly, standing plates on their side (instead of stacking them) will make sure any impact is less likely to cause damage.

Being too specific with labeling. We know you want to find grandma’s heirloom brooch, but do you really want to advertise to everyone what box it (and any other valuables) are packed in?  Feel free to use code words, it makes the whole process a little more James Bond-like.

Not labeling your boxes enough. Yes, we know we just told you not to over-do the labeling, but under-labeling can be just as bad. Be sure labels include the room that the items will be moving to (or from) and some general terms. This will help make sure everything gets where it’s going.

Avoiding these common moving missteps will go a long way in helping you keep your sanity during the transition. Oh, and remember if you can’t fit it all in your new accommodations we have a self storage place for you to store it.
