Proper Packing Tips For Your Finest Things

Now that the holidays are over, you’re probably done with hosting large family dinners and parties for a few months. That means that its time to pack up the good china and crystal and store it out of the way and out of danger! If you’re not sure the best way to store these expensive pieces, and don’t want to take the risk of breaking a family heirloom, our Ogdensburg, NJ storage specialist at AA1 Self Storage has the info you need to properly pack each piece.

1. Choose the right packing material. Tissue paper or newspaper isn’t going to cut it for protection of these pieces. Try using bubble wrap instead, and don’t use it sparingly! Place a few dishes inside a sturdy cardboard box for added protection. Some home goods stores even sell cloth bags specifically designed with your china in mind. It may be worth a trip to your local shop to see what they have to offer.

2. Felt is for fragile items. Purchase a few yards of felt at your local craft or fabric store and use it to separate your plates inside a box. For large dinner plates, try to keep the maximum number of plates per box between six or eight. This will keep the boxes from getting to heavy, which could cause you to accidentally drop it! That’s definitely something we want to avoid!

3. For glassware, look into purchasing boxes specifically designed to pack glasses and cups. They have individual spaces to nestle each glass into, keeping them from banging into one another when being taken on and off a shelf or moved around. If you don’t want to opt for these boxes, make sure to pack glassware standing on end, wrapping each individual glass in newspaper or felt and putting cardboard spacers between each row of breakables.

4. Label, label, label! The last thing you want to do is to mistake a box of china for a box of photo albums and toss it to the side while getting organized. Be sure to label the contents of each box on multiple sides with a black marker, to avoid any terrible mistakes! If you have multiple boxes, you may want to number them and keep an inventory of what is inside each box, so that you don’t have to open them all searching for a specific piece.

Once you’ve got your fine china and glassware packed up, bring them to us and let us store them for you! We recommend that you store these valuables in a NJ climate controlled unit to avoid swings in extreme temperatures, which we have available for your rental convenience.
