Spending Time in Sussex County, New Jersey

Here in Sussex County, NJ, we take great pride in the variety of National Historic sites that are registered in our community. As the weather turns warmer, why not schedule a few family outings close to home, in order to appreciate all that our northernmost county has to offer? This month, we’ve highlighted 4 local attractions that you won’t want to miss in the months to come.

• If you’re looking to escape the heat, we suggest that you take in a performance by the Cornerstone Playhouse, located in the Historic Crescent Theater, 74 Main Street, Sussex, NJ. This theater was built in 1917 and was one of the first in the region to show films with sound. To find out the schedule of current performances, call the box office at (973) 702-0687.

• If you enjoying spending time outside, you won’t want to miss a trek to the High Point Monument, located in High Point State Park in Montague, NJ. This monument stands 220 feet tall and was built in 1930 to commemorate those that have lost their lives in war. High Point is the highest peak of the Kittatinny Mountains and the monument can be seen from Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey.

• The Stillwater Historical Museum is a fantastic place to view historical artifacts and records of local families from Sussex County. Open on Sundays from 2-4 PM in June, July and August, the museum is housed in the original school of the Village of Stillwater, known as the “The Academy” during its operation back in the late nineteenth century.

• Interested in seeing what a canal town looked like? Then, you’ll want to check out . Waterloo Village, located in Byram Township. This 19th century canal town was conveniently built along the midpoint of the Morris Canal, providing a place of rest for weary travelers making the 102 mile trip between Jersey City and Phillipsburg, New Jersey. Come stroll through the grounds from sunrise to sunset and explore this open air museum, located in Allamuchy Mountain State Park.
