Columbus Day is a US Holiday that celebrates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World on Oct.12, 1942. This holiday was celebrated as early as the 18th century but did not gain official federal holiday status until 1937.

Christopher Columbus was born in Italian, but was backed by Spanish King and Queen Ferdinand and Isabella. He landing in the US was actually a mistake. He was trying to go along the western sea route to China and India, with promises of gold and spices there. His first landing was actually in the Bahamas. He was the first European to land in the Americas since the Vikings.

After that Columbus continued on and thought he stumbled upon China and Japan, but these were actually Cuba and Hispaniola. There he officially established a colony in the name of Spain.

The first official Columbus Day celebration took place in 1792 in New York. Italian and Catholic communities had parades and religious ceremonies honoring his achievements. President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed Columbus Day a national holiday in 1937 and announced it would be celebrated the second Monday in October.

Though the Holiday has become somewhat controversial it is still widely recognized in the US to this day. We hope you and your family have a wonderful Columbus Day!
