Celebrating Independence in Ogdensburg, NJ

One of our favorite Ogdensburg, NJ holidays is right around the corner; that’s right Fourth of July! As you probably know, Fourth of July or Independence Day celebrates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by our forefathers on July 4th 1776. We thought we’d share some interesting facts related to Independence Day you may not know to get you in a patriotic mood:

• Philadelphia citizens marked the first anniversary of American independence with a spontaneous celebration. Observing Independence Day however only became commonplace after the War of 1812.

• By the 1870s, the Fourth of July was THE most important secular holiday on the calendar. In fact it was made a federal holiday by Congress on June 28, 1870.

• Our nation sure has grown. The estimated number of people living in the newly independent nation In July 1776, was 2.5 million; the current estimated population now is 313.8 million! Wow!

• Did you know eleven places throughout our nation have “independence” in their names. The most populous one is Independence, Mo., with a population of 116,830.

• Potato salad and potato chips are popular food items at Fourth of July barbecues and celebrations. A huge amount of the potatoes for all of those potato salads were produced in Idaho or Washington State last year (that’s almost half of the nation’s potatoes).
