Hamburg was formed in 1753 and became a part of Hardyston Township in 1762. The first Hamburg, NJ settlers came in the mid-eighteenth century. Among one of them was Joseph Walling, Sr. in 1740. He built an inn in the middle of town where the Wachovia Bank now stands. There is even a rumor that General George Washington stayed at this Inn while traveling to Easton, Pennsylvania from Newburgh, New York.

A few other famous citizens include Joseph Urban, who built the Famous Gingerbread Castle; Governor Daniel Haines who was an influential lawyer who oversaw the making of a new state constitution; and Colonel Joseph Edsall, who owned a forge and blacksmith shop and was later elected to Congress.

Hamburg was a stopping place for stagecoaches and then become a hub for the railroad. A monumental event for the town was the creation of their fire department in 1909. First purchased was a hand-drawn hook and ladder truck with 24 rubber buckets. The Hardyston National Bank was built in 1906 and still stands in the center of Main St.
