Going Beyond Memorial Day

We hope everyone had a great 2012 Memorial Day. This is a day that is very important to us. It is a day where we can all take some time to remember the brave men and women who have fallen for our country while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Do you know the history of Memorial Day? Memorial Day originated as Decoration Day, during the Civil War. Women and children would honor the graves of the fallen soldiers by decorating them. It grew into an annual time of remembrance and was officially declared Memorial Day in 1967. A few years later the official date was changed from the traditional May 30th to the last Monday in May.

We think honoring our armed forces members should not be limited to one day. There are many organizations that offer ways for civilians to show their support throughout the year. We ask you join us in going beyond Memorial Day and honor your troops today and all year-round, here are a few ideas to help you get started:

  • Visit the State of New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs for local volunteer opportunities here.
  • Send a care package to deployed service men and women through organizations such as AdoptaPlatoon.  See their website here.
  • Simply write a letter thanking our active, reserve or veteran military service members through amillionthanks.org.

Let’s make every day a Memorial Day.
